Everything below comes from Rockstar's two official trailers (December 2023 and May 2025), Rockstar Newswire posts, and Take-Two's public statements. Nothing here is based on leaks or guesswork unless explicitly flagged.

Dual protagonists

GTA 6 features two playable leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, whose stories are told as a single connected narrative from two perspectives. For a full breakdown of their backstories and relationship, see the character guide on this site.

  1. You can switch between Jason and Lucia in single-player, similar in concept to the three-way switch in GTA 5.
  2. Rockstar has confirmed moments of "dual control", where both characters are active in the same scene or heist.
  3. Lucia is the first non-optional female protagonist with a full voice role in mainline GTA history.

The weapon and gear wheel

The classic weapon wheel has been expanded into a combined weapons-and-gear wheel, accessed the same way (R1/RB on controller).

  • Confirmed gear items include binoculars, body armour, a flashlight, food and drink, duffel bags, and trauma kits.
  • Weapons can reportedly be customised further than in GTA 5, though Rockstar hasn't detailed a full attachment list yet.
  • Expanded drive-by mechanics let you shoot from car windows, truck beds, and even while swimming.

Physics and animation upgrades

Rockstar has shown off several tangible engine improvements in the trailers:

  • Ray-traced global illumination and reflections for more realistic lighting across Vice City's neon and daylight scenes.
  • Strand-based hair physics, where individual hair strands react to wind and movement rather than moving as a single clump.
  • Weightier vehicle physics: cars, bikes, and boats handle differently depending on surface, speed, and damage state, pushing closer to simulation-style driving than GTA 5's arcade feel.
  • More natural character animation, driven by new motion-capture work, affecting everything from running to combat.

Underwater exploration

Fully explorable underwater areas are confirmed, fitting the Everglades-style wetlands of the Grassrivers region and the Leonida Keys. Rockstar has said these areas contain discoverable treasure, adding an exploration layer that didn't really exist in GTA 5's ocean floor.

Map: the state of Leonida

GTA 6 takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, a modern reimagining of Florida. Rockstar's official screenshots and trailers have named six regions:

  • Vice City (the map's Miami-inspired centrepiece)
  • Leonida Keys
  • Grassrivers
  • Port Gellhorn
  • Ambrosia
  • Mount Kalaga (a forested northern wilderness)

Community estimates put the map at roughly 1.5–2x the size of GTA 5's map, though Rockstar has not published an official square-mile figure. Full location-by-location detail is covered in the map guide on this site.

Multiplayer and GTA Online

Rockstar and Take-Two have both described GTA 6 as a "single-player experience" in official store listings and statements. There is no GTA Online-style mode confirmed for launch day, 19 November 2026.

This mirrors GTA 5's 2013 launch, where GTA Online arrived several weeks after the single-player game. Whether Rockstar repeats that pattern for GTA 6 is unconfirmed — treat any online mode as speculative until Rockstar says otherwise.

Platforms

GTA 6 is confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only at launch. No PC version has a confirmed date; based on GTA 5's pattern (PC arrived roughly 18 months after console), a PC release is widely expected in 2027 or later, but this is an expectation, not a confirmed fact.

How this compares to GTA 5

For a full side-by-side breakdown, see the comparison article on this site. In short: bigger map, two leads instead of three, deeper physics, and a modern-day setting instead of GTA 5's 2013 present-day Los Santos.
