Setting: Los Santos to Leonida

GTA 5 was set in San Andreas, centred on the fictional Los Santos (Los Angeles). GTA 6 moves to Leonida, Rockstar's fictional Florida, built around a modernised Vice City (Miami). Rockstar's own description calls it "the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet."

Confirmed regions within Leonida include:

  • Vice City — the main urban hub.
  • Leonida Keys — a tropical island chain including Key Lento, where Jason's starting apartment is located.
  • Grassrivers — Everglades-style wetlands.
  • Mount Kalaga National Park — mountainous terrain.
  • Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia — smaller towns providing rural contrast to the city.

For a full regional breakdown, see the GTA 6 map and Leonida locations guide, and for background on the setting itself, the Vice City what we know guide.

Map size: confirmed vs estimated

Rockstar has not published an official map size figure. Community estimates based on trailer analysis and satellite-style comparisons put Leonida somewhere between 1.5x and 2.5x the size of GTA 5's map, with much more biome variety — city, coastline, swamp, and mountains, instead of GTA 5's largely desert-and-city layout. Treat any exact multiplier you see as an estimate, not a Rockstar-confirmed number.

Protagonists: three to two

GTA 5 let you switch between three playable characters — Michael, Franklin, and Trevor — at almost any time. GTA 6 confirmed two protagonists instead: Jason Duval, an Army veteran turned small-time criminal, and Lucia Caminos, who starts the story fresh out of prison. Lucia is the series' first mandatory female protagonist, not an optional or secondary character. For character backgrounds and confirmed story details, see the Jason and Lucia character guide.

Engine and simulation upgrades

Trailer footage and Rockstar statements point to several system-level upgrades over GTA 5:

  • Interiors — dramatically more enterable buildings: shops, clubs, homes, and businesses that function as real, explorable spaces rather than locked facades.
  • Wanted system depth — being able to duck inside a building, change clothes, or otherwise break line of sight adds an indoor dimension to evading police that GTA 5 didn't have.
  • NPC and traffic AI — described as noticeably smarter, intended to make traversal across the much larger map feel purposeful rather than empty.
  • Character transitions — smoother switching between Jason and Lucia during missions and cutscenes, versus GTA 5's more segmented protagonist-switching.

Some community sources refer to this as "RAGE 9," but Rockstar has not officially confirmed an engine version number — treat any specific engine name as unconfirmed.

Online integration: less certain than GTA 5's launch

GTA 5 launched in September 2013 as single-player, with GTA Online following as a free update about two weeks later. Official PlayStation Store listing language describes GTA 6 as "a single-player experience," and Take-Two has given no confirmation of an online mode at launch. Whether a future GTA 6 Online will share the same Leonida map or launch as a separate mode is unconfirmed as of July 2026 — expect it to work similarly to GTA 5's rollout in broad strokes, but don't assume specifics.

What hasn't changed

  1. Core structure: an open-world crime story told through missions, side content, and free roam.
  2. Rockstar's approach to fictionalised real-world cars, weapons, and brands.
  3. A protagonist-driven narrative rather than a fully custom player character.
  4. Console-first release strategy, with any PC version arriving later, if at all.
